This release marked the final Walmart-exclusive (in the U.S.) Mary-Kate and Ashley dolls. In true Walmart and Dualstar fashion, these dolls were designed as a cross-promotion for the brand's new fragrance line, available in stores. The featured scents were marykateandashley one (Jasmine Spice) and marykateandashley two (Water Lily Rose). Each doll was sold separately and included a scratch-and-sniff sample of its corresponding fragrance inside the packaging. Unlike previous releases, these dolls were standalone figures and did not come with accessories.
Mary-Kate was dressed in a navy top paired with striped pants, while Ashley wore a striped top with a denim skirt. Additionally, the packaging featured chip art showcasing the fragrances.
By this time, a noticeable shift had begun within the doll line. In 2003, at the height of their brand's success, Dualstar was generating $1 billion in revenue. With an extensive range of products bearing their name, it appeared that Mary-Kate and Ashley were primarily approving designs and packaging rather than being heavily involved in product development. This assumption is supported by the first notable packaging error in the doll line - Mary-Kate's box mistakenly featured a picture of Ashley, and vice versa.
Additionally, this release introduced the first-ever variant in the collection. Since Walmart did not operate in Australia, these dolls were rebranded as the Sense of Style dolls. Instead of including fragrance samples, the Australian versions came packaged with a Two of a Kind book. Photos of these variants can be seen below.
