Holiday In The Sun: November 2002
In the early 2000s, one of the only ways to watch a movie was by visiting a Blockbuster Video store to rent or purchase a VHS or DVD. For fans of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, this often meant picking up their direct-to-video films.
In November 2002, Dualstar began re-releasing many of these films, which were previously only available on VHS, onto DVD. Holiday in the Sun was one of the titles included in this release. As part of a strategic partnership, Blockbuster and Dualstar collaborated to prominently feature Olsen films in the children's section of Blockbuster stores. This partnership also led to an exclusive set of Mary-Kate and Ashley dolls, available only at Blockbuster locations.
Although the dolls were exclusive to Blockbuster, Mattel also introduced complementary Fashion Packs featuring three outfits inspired by the film, one of which matched the outfits worn by the exclusive dolls. Unlike the dolls, these fashion packs were widely available at toy retailers and were not exclusive to Blockbuster.
Since this doll set was never formally announced or promoted by Mattel, Dualstar, or Blockbuster, it has become one of the rarest and most difficult to find.
- Ashley's doll featured a blue halter top, a blue tropical-print skirt, a clear handbag, and a camera.
- Mary-Kate's doll wore a purple strapless tropical-print dress and came with a clear purple handbag and a camera.
INTERESTING FACTS
- Due to Blockbuster's smaller scale compared to other retailers and the limited production of these dolls, they are considered a rare collectible and often command a high price.
